Little Drummer Boy's Birthmark

Yesterday, I was working on some homework while Camden played quietly with his toys. After a few minutes, I heard a small whine. Then the whine got a little louder, a little more frustrated. Finally, I heard a small voice say, "Ma?" I got up to investigate what the trouble could be. And this is what I found:

Instead of helping him out of his stuck-in-drum predicament, I ran to get the camera, like any good mother would do. Thankfully, he was a good sport about it.

On another note, take a look at his left hand. We took him to the dermatologist for his fifth laser treatment (for birthmark removal) a few days ago. It never gets any easier, I swear. Well, now that he's older, he is offered a ring pop after each zapping session, which is a small consolation but seems to make Camden happy. Anyway, I was holding out hope that the doctor would take one look at his hand and declare, "Success! This will be his last treatment. You'll never have to see my face or this building again. Now, take as many ring pops as you'd like and be gone."

Alas, that didn't happen. Instead, Dr. B concluded that Camden would likely need 4-5 more treatments. That doesn't sound THAT bad, I'll concede, but when his appointments only occur every 2 or 3 months-- well, that means he'll still be getting zapped up until his 2nd birthday. And that just seems so far away right now.

When we were leaving the office, Dr. B showed us a Christmas card that one of his 5 year old patients had made for him. On the front, scrawled in a child's sloppy handwriting, it said "Merry Chismas". On the inside, it read, "Will you please quit it."

Pretty sure that's what Camden's Christmas card to Dr. B would read too.

Hey....why did I not know/remember that CAm had a birthmark on his hand? Did they suggest you guys get it removed?? I mean, I can't imagine taking him every few months to get zapped....boo!

Amy- It's definitely hard, but I think will be well worth it once we're done. He has a port wine stain birthmark that covers part of his left hand, thumb, and wrist. The pediatrician referred us to this dermatologist who specializes in birthmark removal. She pointed out that, although the birthmark is small now, it will continue to grow as he does (so, when he's a full grown man, it would cover a much larger portion of his arm). So, we decided to get it removed. His dr. says that once he's done, you won't be able to tell which hand had the birthmark, which is encouraging.

hey, I just went back and read your posts about his birthmark. I don't think I knew about this before now, but I can't see it in ANY of his pictures....so I guess the laser removal has helped already!

I guess i really need to tag my posts also, makes things so much easier...ha.

Oh my gosh, that Christmas card from the 5-year old made me laugh so hard. Hilarious.
I'm sorry there's still a ways to go with his hand, but it sure is cool to see the progress. And that's 4-5 more ring pops! :)
Love the picture. You do realize that's the same exact tub that Alex got stuck in, right? And that I ran and got the camera, while his more mature big brother tried to help him out of it? :)

hey, Your son is adorable, but then you already know that!

His treatment (if you can call it that) will be over before you even know about it.

PS: thanks for dropping by and saying hi.

I am so tired of him having to get zapped too but I know one day he will thank you.

Here from the ICLW...those laser treatments are the WORST. My daughter has had three so far for hemogemionas on her leg, and will need more. They do work well though. The improvement has been dramatic. Hoping the rest of the sessions go by as quickly and painlessly as possible!

Hey Kerri, I've been wanting to comment since some of this stuff relates to what I have been studying. I'm going to send you an email with a few things and you can decide what you want to do with the information.

As for the little boy's card--it is a little funny and a little sad. But more importantly, it was a theraputic experience for him and I am glad his mother let him give it to the doctor. It allowed the child to have a creative and honest outlet, to express and process his feelings, and to be able to communicate this with the doctor.
