It's almost bedtime and I'm doing some last minute things in the bathroom in preparation. I pause as I hear giggling begin in the next room-- the kind that starts softly and then escalates quickly into uncontrollable laughter. I listen closely to their squeals of excitement and wonder what they're doing in his room. Then I hear a small crash followed by silence. I brace myself for the inevitable screams. But they don't come. Instead, I hear a soft, concerned voice ask, "Are you okay?" And I hear the sweet unmistakable voice that can only belong to a toddler reply, "Otay, bro."
I walk quietly to his bedroom door and peek inside. Their backs are to me. His arm is slung around her shoulder and she rests her head against him.
It's a moment that isn't extraordinary but I know I will remember it forever just the same.
They turn when they sense my presence. One smiles; the other shouts, "Mommy!" and runs towards my open arms.
And I know that there is nothing else in the world that will ever matter more to me than being the mother of these two beautiful souls.

One of my favorite posts. They are two special kids. Their Mommy and Daddy are pretty special too.
