As a side note, this is the last lesson with just Camden. After today, you will start seeing my nephew, Will, in pictures as well. We're excited he joined our preschool!
Day one:
As usual, we begin each lesson by listening to our Leap Frog Fridge Phonics tell us what our Letter of the Week says. I doubt I'll post any more pictures of this; I think you guys get the point now. I do love this tool and highly recommend it. I will find Camden going over to the fridge to listen to the catchy little songs this thing plays all throughout the day. Great educational toy.
Next up? You guessed it: our handwriting practice. Check out Camden's grip on his marker! It's a little more refined than the fist grasp he was using just a few short weeks ago. Gotta love that tongue out in concentration face!
For math, we used these nest printables from The Measured Mom. Each nest had a number inside (from 1-10) and Camden used some little stones as "eggs" (because, you know, E word!) to fill the nests.
Next, we discussed some kid-friendly facts about eagles.
Finally, it was time to get down to Camden's favorite part of each school day: craft time. We made a handprint eagle for our craft on Day One. I've started to really let Camden take the lead on these crafts, including doing a lot of the cutting. Initially, I was pre-cutting most of the craft pieces for him, but cutting is such a great fine motor exercise that I decided it would be best if he mostly took over that responsibility.
Why do all kids love glue so much?
The finished product: a handprint eagle. I did cut out his handprints for him, but the rest of the cutting (and gluing) work is his.
Day Two:
We skipped the handwriting opening of day two's lesson in favor of some fine motor practice. Camden filled a big E and a little e with some coins. (I cut these Ee's out myself, but there are plenty of letter printables online.)
Next, I introduced Camden to E-Man (get it? Camden's totally into He-Man right now, so I thought he'd enjoy that). I had Camden look at E-Man and place a star sticker on any Ee's he saw on him. We then discussed body parts that start with the letter E, so those body parts also got star stickers on E-Man. (Side note: I totally need a laminator! These are the kinds of teaching tools that I could reuse again and again if they were laminated.)
Next, we used a Measured Mom printable and filled in an elephant and big E with dot stickers.
Next, we read some songs and poems from this Measured Mom "Little Letter E Book".
We then discussed some kid-friendly facts about elephants. (Did you know elephants are the largest living land mammal?)
Finally, we finished up with our craft. Since Camden really enjoyed using his own handprints to make the eagle on Day One, we made some handprint elephants on Day Two. He had a hard time visualizing how they were going to be elephants ("But elephants don't have hands!") until the very end. He's always so proud of his final product and can't wait to show it off to Matt when he gets home from work.
Be back next week with my lessons featuring two students!
